Calvin offers a challenge to our preoccupation with worship style and presupposed "freedom in new covenant worship". He was bold in his commitment that worship be regulated by Scripture alone. I found the following audio to be very helpful in synthesizing what I read in the Institutes.

Calvin and the Worship of God
One of the things I discovered after reading John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, is that he was not all about '5 points', as many of the people that claim the name 'Calvinist' would lead you to believe. It was striking to me that the longest book in the Institutes was not about salvation but on the Church and its worship, something that is rarely discussed in our age (unless we're talking about the style of instrumental music). It seems to me that the church's worship is being eclipsed by the Great Commission; in other words, the means to the end is becoming the end itself. Our Lord's Day gatherings are structured for what we think will aid our evangelism rather than what will please God, being acceptable worship to Him.
