Belgic Confession, Article 1 - One God

Article 1: There is only one God

We all believe with the heart and confess with the mouth that there is one only simple and spiritual Being, which we call God; and that He is eternal, incomprehensible, invisible, immutable, infinite, almighty, perfectly wise, just, good, and the overflowing fountain of all good.

The first article in the Belgic Confession concerns God Himself and is the first of 11 that concern God (the revealer) and Scripture (the revelation).

Some notes on this article:

  • “Simple” does not mean “simplistic”; instead, it refers to the fact that God is not composed of parts. In other words, there are no building blocks to God, making something else more ultimate than Him. Nothing is more ultimate than His being, or essence.
  • The God we believe in has revealed Himself in Scripture (Article 2) to be “eternal, incomprehensible, etc.”, but His simplicity means that those attributes are not different parts of Him but different facets of how we understand Him to be. In other words, using our finite language, we understand God to be “perfectly wise, just, good, etc.” in His very nature.
